About Viji’s Recipe
Sharing authentic recipes for every home kitchen
Viji Varadarajan learned to cook at the crossroads of two traditions, her parental home and her husband’s family kitchen. Trained in both, she brings a deep understanding of Tamil Brahmin cuisine, shaped and perfected over generations in homes and temples across South India.
Concerned that today’s generation was losing touch with this culinary heritage, Viji set out to record these recipes for posterity. Many of these dishes are rarely found in restaurants and live on in only a handful of homes. Her recipes take everyday vegetables and transform them into both simple, comforting meals and more elaborate, festive dishes.
“I learnt my cooking from my mother and mother-in-law. I have retained their instructions practically to the last word,” she says, “while recognising the need for busy professionals who need to put together a meal in the minimum time frame.”
Beyond the kitchen, Viji is passionate about fitness and wellness. She has practised yoga, swimming and aerobics, and has spent many years as a classical Indian dancer, alongside a lifelong love of classical Indian music.
